Date: October 14th 2008

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about our meeting for November.  I have selected the novel: "Peace Like A River" by Leif Enger.  I have had this book for awhile now but haven't read it.  I recently learned that they are in the process of making it into a movie with Billy Bob Thornton having one of the leading roles.  Since I like to read books before seeing the movie... I figured this was a good time to finally get it read.   Below is a synopsis of the book.  Since the story focuses on "miracles" I am hoping this will provide us with a lively discussion due to the diversity of our group.

I would like to schedule our meeting for Monday, November 24th @ 7:00 pm at Starbucks in North Logan.  Since the last week has the holiday of Thanksgiving, I wanted to pick a time to meet before we all get busy with holiday plans and/or travel.  Hope that date works well for everyone.  If not, let me know.

Looking forward to seeing you all at this month's meeting.  I too, was able to snag a copy of "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil" from the Logan Library.  There are two more copies left!

Thanks,

Gillian Whitney

November's Book Club - synopsis

Peace Like a River - By Leif Enger (pbk 2002)

"Hailed as one of the year's top five novels by Time, and selected as one of the best books of the year by nearly all major newspapers, national bestseller Peace Like a River captured the hearts of a nation in need of comfort. "A rich mixture of adventure, tragedy, and healing," Peace Like a River is "a collage of legends from sources sacred and profane — from the Old Testament to the Old West, from the Gospels to police dramas" (Ron Charles, The Christian Science Monitor). In "lyrical, openhearted prose" (Michael Glitz, The New York Post), Enger tells the story of eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who has reason to believe in miracles. Along with his sister and father, Reuben finds himself on a cross-country search for his outlaw older brother who has been controversially charged with murder. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and its remarkable conclusion shows how family, love, and faith can stand up to the most terrifying of enemies, the most tragic of fates. Leif Enger's "miraculous" (Valerie Ryan, The Seattle Times) novel is a "perfect book for an anxious time ... of great literary merit that nonetheless restores readers' faith in the kindness of stories" (Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press)."

*** Please note:  There are 3 copies at Logan Library and/or the book is available to purchase in paperback at Borders for $12.56 ***
