A correction to the announcement I sent out yesterday: the meeting
day/time is Thursday SEPTEMBER 25, 2008 at 7 PM at the Tandoori Oven
(inside the Sinclair gas station at 720 E 1000 N in Logan) for dinner
and to discuss this month's book which I selected: "When I'm engulfed in
flames" by David Sedaris. Please RSVP by Tuesday 9/23 so that I can make
a reservation for the appropriate number of people.

August Book Club Meeting

Hi everyone-

Its almost time for the August book club meeting. I think Starbucks worked
out well for July, so we'll meet there again this time. Let's meet on
Tuesday, August 26 at 6:30pm. Once again, the book is "Perfume" by Patrick
Susskind. Hope to see you all there!

September's book is "When you are Engulfed in Flames," selected by David
Rosenberg. The book is on sale at Borders for 40% off, so if you are
planning to buy it, you might want to take advantage of this deal.

We Need to Talk About Kevin

July meeting: Wednesday July 30 6:30pm at Starbucks Cafe (in North Logan, off North Main, next to Bed Bath and Beyond and in shopping center across from Wal-Mart).
(This date is 35 days after our reading of Krakauer's _Under the Banner_.)

The work is made up of letters the narrator writes to her husband about whom we only learn throughout the course of the novel. If, for example, you get annoyed or stuck at a certain part which is not propelling the narrative forward, then you are welcome to skip some letters as a different story or event is related in each letter. Although the Literature Professor in me condones such behaviour, I recognize that the work itself does indeed seem tedious at times, especially when the author builds the mother's character with a slight plethora of letters.

Even if you have not finished the novel, I am sure the discussion of the work will prove a good one.

Thanks to all of you who came to the book club meeting at the mall on Tuesday.

The book club selection for Tuesday, 24 June, at 6:00pm (Location TBD) is Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. This one should be great for men & women to attend and a lively discussion is guaranteed! With all that is going on in Texas at the Yearning for Zion Ranch and the FLDS sect, I think this is an interesting and timely read. I’ve read the book (it’s a very fast read!) and was mesmerized by the details about fundamentalist Mormonism. If you are someone, or know of someone, who has a special perspective on Mormonism and/or Fundamentalist Mormonism, we would love for you to come to this book club meeting and add to the discussion.

In 1984, Ron and Dan Lafferty murdered the wife and infant daughter of their younger brother Allen. The crimes were noteworthy not merely for their brutality but for the brothers' claim that they were acting on direct orders from God. In Under the Banner of Heaven, Jon Krakauer tells the story of the killers and their crime but also explores the shadowy world of Mormon fundamentalism from which the two emerged. The Mormon Church was founded, in part, on the idea that true believers could speak directly with God. But while the mainstream church attempted to be more palatable to the general public by rejecting the controversial tenet of polygamy, fundamentalist splinter groups saw this as apostasy and took to the hills to live what they believed to be a righteous life. When their beliefs are challenged or their patriarchal, cult-like order defied, these still-active groups, according to Krakauer, are capable of fighting back with tremendous violence. While Krakauer's research into the history of the church is admirably extensive, the real power of the book comes from present-day information, notably jailhouse interviews with Dan Lafferty. Far from being the brooding maniac one might expect, Lafferty is chillingly coherent, still insisting that his motive was merely to obey God's command.
