		 <title> January Book Club
</title>
		 <link>http://www.new2logan.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/bookclub/20081210112637/</link>
		 <description>

Hi all!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;The book for January will be &#60;font size=&#34;2&#34;&#62;&#60;span id=&#34;btAsinTitle&#34; style=&#34;&#34;&#62;The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester.&#38;nbsp; &#60;br&#62;
&#60;br&#62;Here is the description from Amazon: &#60;/span&#62;&#60;/font&#62;&#60;b&#62;The Professor and the Madman&#60;/b&#62;, masterfully researched and
eloquently written, is an extraordinary tale of madness, genius, and
the incredible obsessions of two remarkable men that led to the making
of the Oxford English Dictionary -- and literary history. The
compilation of the OED began in 1857, it was one of the most ambitious
projects ever undertaken. As definitions were collected, the overseeing
committee, led by Professor James Murray, discovered that one man, Dr.
W. C. Minor, had submitted more than ten thousand. When the committee
insisted on honoring him, a shocking truth came to light: Dr. Minor, an
American Civil War veteran, was also an inmate at an asylum for the
criminally insane.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;We will meet on Wed. January 15, 2009 at 7pm.&#38;nbsp; I will let you know the location as soon as I figure it out!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;See you then!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Ann&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;Hi everyone,&#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;&#60;/FONT&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;I enjoyed getting together with you all last week to discuss &#60;EM&#62;Midnight in the Garden of Good &#38;amp; Evil&#60;/EM&#62;.&#38;nbsp; In follow up, here are the details&#38;nbsp;for this month's&#38;nbsp;book club meeting:&#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;Date/Time: Monday, November 24th @ 7:00 p.m. &#60;/DIV&#62;

&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;I chose this book as it was highly recommended for a good discussion for book clubs.&#38;nbsp; Plus it was book I've had on my shelf for awhile now but haven't read it yet.&#38;nbsp; Last&#38;nbsp;month I learned&#38;nbsp;they are now in the process of making this book into a movie with Billy Bob Thornton having one of the leading&#38;nbsp;roles.&#38;nbsp; Since I like to read books before seeing the movie... I figured this was a good time to finally get it read.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Below is a synopsis of the book.&#38;nbsp; Since the story focuses on &#34;miracles&#34; I am hoping&#38;nbsp;that the diversity of our group will&#38;nbsp;provide us with a lively&#38;nbsp;discussion.&#38;nbsp; &#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;

&#60;DIV&#62;Book synopsis:&#60;/DIV&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;

&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;&#60;SPAN style=&#34;FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial&#34;&#62;Hailed as one of the year's top five novels by Time, and selected as one of the best books of the year by nearly all major newspapers, national bestseller &#60;EM&#62;Peace Like a River&#60;/EM&#62; captured the hearts of a nation in need of comfort. &#34;A rich mixture of adventure, tragedy, and healing,&#34; Peace Like a River is &#34;a collage of legends from sources sacred and profane — from the Old Testament to the Old West, from the Gospels to police dramas&#34; (Ron Charles, The Christian Science Monitor). In &#34;lyrical, openhearted prose&#34; (Michael Glitz, The New York Post), Enger tells the story of eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who has reason to believe in miracles. Along with his sister and father, Reuben finds himself on a cross-country search for his outlaw older brother who has been controversially charged with murder. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and its remarkable conclusion shows how family, love, and faith can stand up to the most terrifying of enemies, the most tragic of fates. Leif Enger's &#34;miraculous&#34; (Valerie Ryan, The Seattle Times) novel is a &#34;perfect book for an anxious time ... of great literary merit that nonetheless restores readers' faith in the kindness of stories&#34; (Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press).&#60;/SPAN&#62;&#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;

&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;Hi everyone,&#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;&#60;/FONT&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;I enjoyed getting together with you all last week
to discuss &#60;EM&#62;Midnight in the Garden of Good &#38;amp; Evil&#60;/EM&#62;.&#38;nbsp; In follow
up, here are the details&#38;nbsp;for this month's&#38;nbsp;book club
meeting:&#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;Date/Time: Monday, November 24th @ 7:00 p.m. &#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;Place:&#38;nbsp; Starbucks - North Logan&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;&#60;/FONT&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;Book:&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#34;&#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial
size=2&#62;Peace Like A River&#34; by Leif Enger. (pbk. 2002)&#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;&#60;/FONT&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;I chose this book as it was highly recommended for
a good discussion for book clubs.&#38;nbsp; Plus it was book I've had on my shelf
for awhile now but haven't read it yet.&#38;nbsp; Last&#38;nbsp;month I
learned&#38;nbsp;they are now in the process of making this book into a movie with
Billy Bob Thornton having one of the leading&#38;nbsp;roles.&#38;nbsp; Since I like to
read books before seeing the movie... I figured this was a good time to finally
get it read.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Below is a synopsis of the book.&#38;nbsp; Since the story
focuses on &#34;miracles&#34; I am hoping&#38;nbsp;that the diversity of our group
will&#38;nbsp;provide us with a lively&#38;nbsp;discussion.&#38;nbsp; &#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;

style=&#34;FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial&#34;&#62;Hailed as one of the year's top five
novels by Time, and selected as one of the best books of the year by nearly all
major newspapers, national bestseller &#60;EM&#62;Peace Like a River&#60;/EM&#62; captured the
hearts of a nation in need of comfort. &#34;A rich mixture of adventure, tragedy,
and healing,&#34; Peace Like a River is &#34;a collage of legends from sources sacred
and profane — from the Old Testament to the Old West, from the Gospels to police
dramas&#34; (Ron Charles, The Christian Science Monitor). In &#34;lyrical, openhearted
prose&#34; (Michael Glitz, The New York Post), Enger tells the story of
eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who has reason to believe in
miracles. Along with his sister and father, Reuben finds himself on a
cross-country search for his outlaw older brother who has been controversially
charged with murder. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of
strangers, and its remarkable conclusion shows how family, love, and faith can
stand up to the most terrifying of enemies, the most tragic of fates. Leif
Enger's &#34;miraculous&#34; (Valerie Ryan, The Seattle Times) novel is a &#34;perfect book
for an anxious time ... of great literary merit that nonetheless restores
readers' faith in the kindness of stories&#34; (Marta Salij, Detroit Free

&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about our
meeting for November.&#38;nbsp; I have selected the novel: &#34;&#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial
size=2&#62;Peace Like A River&#34; by Leif Enger.&#38;nbsp; I&#38;nbsp;have had this&#38;nbsp;book

Below is a synopsis of the book.&#38;nbsp; Since the story focuses on &#34;miracles&#34; I

to&#38;nbsp;the diversity of our group.&#38;nbsp; &#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;&#60;/FONT&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial size=2&#62;I would like to schedule our meeting for Monday,
November 24th @ 7:00 pm at Starbucks in North Logan.&#38;nbsp; Since the last week
has the holiday of Thanksgiving, I wanted to pick a time to meet before we all
get busy with holiday plans and/or travel.&#38;nbsp; Hope that date works well for
everyone.&#38;nbsp; If not, let me know.&#60;/FONT&#62;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/DIV&#62;
&#60;DIV&#62;&#60;FONT size=2&#62;&#60;FONT face=Arial&#62;Looking forward to seeing you all at this
